The Chartreux is thought to have been developed in France during the middle ages by Monks of the Monastarty of La Grande Chartreuse by using cats imported from North Africa. It is stouter than the British Blue Shorthair and has more gray in the coat color. It's face is less round that the British Blue. In Great Britain, selective breeding has brought the Chartreux so close in type to the British Blue Shorthair that no distinction is made between the two breeds. The coat is short and dense and is medium to light blue in color. The body is strong and muscular. Eyes are copper or orange in color.
